Wall Panels

What are wall panels?

Wall panels are wood stud sheathed walls assembled in sections by precision machines in environmentally controlled facilities for commercial and residential construction. Wall panels are the easiest way for you to build in less time, with less labor and waste.

Image of workers installing a wall panelWall panels can be built in lengths from 3" all the way up to 20', with some panels as long as 22'. The height of the wall can vary from 3' up to 20' or more, but the general maximum that one wall can be constructed to is 20' long by 12' tall, with 2" x 4" or 2" x 6" construction. The walls themselves will be built with all appropriate openings such as doors, windows, fireplaces, or niches already framed into place. Wall panels will also come complete with junctions and necessary overlapping top plates to join the panels together.

How are wall panels constructed?

Wall panels can be made from standard dimensional lumber or from such products as finger-jointed, LVL or LSL studs (we are not currently building walls from metal studs). Wall panels can be sheathed with a variety of exterior sheathing such as OSB, Biltrite, or exterior-grade gypsum sheathing. This sheathing is applied to the side of the wall that creates the outer skin of the house. Wall panels do not come with house wraps or siding products. There is no wall covering on the inside face of the walls such as sheetrock or paneling. The stud cavities are bare, and there are no installed wires for electricity or pipes for plumbing; this will be done on-site as usual.

Do I have to purchase them installed?

Wall panels can be purchased installed through Scherer Brothers Truss Division, or you can choose to install them yourself, however, we recommend you purchase them installed. We use the one of the finest and largest installation subcontractors who specializes in wall panel installation.

How do wall panels fit my business?

Wall panels are the right choice for most any type of residential or commercial remodeling or construction application. The predictability of the product itself, along with its ability to save you time, cover labor shortages, and save money through reduced waste, shorter carrying costs, and safer working conditions make the wall panels a very attractive building option.

Whether you build single-family, large single-family developments, twin-homes, townhomes, or apartments, wall panels are the perfect fit for your business.

What kind of information do I need on my prints to order wall panels?

These are a few of the things that our wall panel designers would like to know for completing your layout:

  • Plan dimensions - Are exterior dimensions to outside of sheathing or outside of framing? A note for this is helpful.
  • Type of sheathing - This is very important and is needed for accurate pricing and layout of walls.
  • Complete dimensions - Can our wall panel designers verify the location of each wall by dimensions?
  • Clear distinction and marking of 2" x 6" vs. 2" x 4" walls.
  • Accurate cross section showing appropriate floor system(s).
  • Any notes calling for different types of lumber - Some customers prefer to use Timberstrand or finger-jointed studs in certain areas.
  • Window callouts - Accurate window lists with rough openings listed are critical.
  • Header height of windows - Where on the wall do we set the windows?
  • Trim and casing size - Helps us to verify that we can frame in every window and door with enough room for trim.
  • Bi-pass and Bi-fold rough openings - This is something that seems to vary from builder to builder, but it is all the better if we know ahead of time.
  • Fireplace rough opening (if used).
  • Any structural information pertaining to the walls - Are there walls that require larger headers than others? Are there two-story walls that should be engineered due to large windows or special concerns of the city? Any information that can be provided in this regard is helpful.
