Domestic Site-Finished Solid Hardwood Flooring

Image of room with domestic hardwood flooringThe most commonly used and widely available wood flooring is domestically grown and harvested. North America has a wealth of well-managed forests and programs to sustain woodlands. Many wood species are resourced here including, but not limited to: ash, birch, fir, American cherry, red oak, white oak, walnut, mahogany, maple, and hickory.

These hardwoods are milled in many widths, lengths, and grades. Historically, the domestic hardwoods accounted for the vast majority of hardwood flooring consumed in the United States. With greater shipping efficiency and the new global economy, there is a trend toward more exotic or foreign grown species of wood floor being used here. Of course, oak and maple still account for the most flooring, but that may change over time.
