Historically mantels and fireplace surrounds have been a way to show the architectural style, age, prosperity, and heritage of the homeowner. Many mantels and surrounds told family stories through visuals, such as woodcarvings. Today mantels and surrounds may not be as decorative, but they are no less works of art. They may be used separately or in conjunction with each other for more visual impact. The mantel is the top, horizontal shelf, which may stand on its own or be used in conjunction with a surround, the section that frames the opening of the fireplace. Mantel styles have a strong resemblance to doorways and are intended to frame the fire and act as a focal point for the room.
Millwork Solutions mantels and surrounds can be as simple or ornate as you wish them to be. We start with six basic styles, in three stock wood species, but we can build virtually any style in any exotic wood species available. All mantels are hand crafted from solid wood with a hollow cavity for easy installation. Setting blocks are included with every mantel. Screw or nail the block to the stud wall and hang the mantel on the blocks. Always consult your local building codes before installing your own mantel.
Mouldings are hand selected from stock or custom milled patterns. We use both professional grade wood adhesives and brad nails to affix all structural members and mouldings, hand sanding joints for a smooth and nearly seamless appearance. Mantel and surrounds are joined, finished and shipped as a single piece. Production times for mantels and surrounds may range from 2-4 weeks depending on size, detail, and material availability.
