Millwork Solutions · Cupolas

Image of Millwork Solutions Rectanular Cupola with ShinglesCupolas add a very distinct, historic look to modern roof styles. All of our cupolas are constructed of rough cedar. Custom cupolas can be constructed square, rectangular, octagonal, and hexagonal and include any combination of trim or moulding. We also offer multiple stock cupolas pictured below.

Rooftops come finished stock with bare 1/2" exterior plywood so they can be shingled to match your roof. Roofs may also be constructed in different shapes including flat-triangular or concave-triangular and finished in copper or pre-finished green, white, black, or brown steel. Many cupolas are topped with a decorative weathervane which are available by special order with your cupola order.

Determining the overall size of the cupola for your home is a matter of preference, but we can offer this "rule-of-thumb" guide: 1" of cupola base for every 1' of roof ridge. So if a standard garage roof ridge were 30' long, you would order a 30" cupola base. Our stock cupola is constructed square, 24" wide by 36" high. Large cupolas are constructed with false louvers, made of lap siding over 3/4" exterior plywood. Smaller cupolas are made with louvers backed by aluminum screening to keep unwanted insects out.

For purposes of accuracy, we do not cut the base to match your roof pitch. Your installer must do that. But keep in mind that the base of your cupola must match the pitch of the roof on which the cupola will sit. A 4/12 pitch requires a much shallower base than a roof with a steeper 12/12 pitch.

Once located to the roof, the parts are easily reassembled and permanently affixed with exterior galvanized screws. Always consult your local building codes for the best method to secure the cupola to your roof. Cupola construction typically takes 2-4 weeks depending on the size of the order and the complexity and size of the cupola itself.
